Motorcyle accidents are on the rise in Tampa due to higher gas prices and more people riding motorcycles to save money. Florida repealed the mandatory helmut law seven years ago and there have been more fatalities related to motorcycle accidents as well.

Motorcycle crashes are up all across the state especially in Hillsborough County. Authorities say more people are riding.

“We see a great curve in commuter traffic it’s kind of like the perfect storm you had rising gas prices and the fact that motorcycle sales are up,” Tampa Police Department, Major John Bennett said.

Through this time last year, two people died in motorcycle crashes in Hillsborough County. This year, there were six fatalities.

The cause of over half of the motorcyle accidents have been the motorcyle drivers.
