A car accident, Tuesday, along West Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa, sent one car crashing into a building and another into a Hillsborough River.

A man, 24, was driving a 1996 Nissan Sentra with two occupants when it was seen sharply changing lanes prior to rear-ending a 1998 Mercedes SUV, according to Tampa Police.

The crash sent the SUV spinning off the road and through a wood fence. It came to rest after crashing the side of a building at Moon River Apartments on North Boulevard

The Nissan swerved across the median, through oncoming traffic, crashing through a metal fence before landing in the Hillsborough River. The vehicle was partially submerged in the water, but divers with the Tampa Police Dive were able to safely remove all occupants from the vehicle.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and listed in guarded condition. The other occupants were not injured in the crash.

The driver of the Mercedes was not injured. Police cited the driver of the Nissan for improper lane change and violation of his learners permit restrictions.
