A 52-year-old Auburndale man struck a utility pole, in a car accident, Tuesday, causing residents in the neighborhood to be without power for over twelve hours.

The man was traveling south on State Road 559 when he drove his 2005 BMW off the side of the road, crashing into a power pole, knocking it down, according to a police report.

EMS transported him to Winter Haven Hospital, for minor injuries. EMS officials informed police that the accident was most likely caused by his insulin pump that was not operating properly.

A Tampa Electric spokesperson said 1,660 customers were affected by the power outage. The crash caused $1,500 worth of damage to power poles and $491 in damages to a state road sign.
Police said at this time no charges will be filed.
