After hearing the testimony of Judge John G. Roberts I am left with one troubling and ironic question – why would a President who admires Justices Scalia and Thomas as model Supreme Court Justices nominate him?

Has Judge Roberts used the secret handshake of the Originalist Society?

It is troubling to suspect that he has revealed a lot more to somebody than he has to the Senate Committee.

After hearing the testimony of Judge John G. Roberts I am left with one troubling and ironic question – why would a President who admires Justices Scalia and Thomas as model Supreme Court Justices nominate him? And, then the sub-question – why are all the Republican Senators and the Republican base so pleased by his nomination?

Who is fooling whom? Is this the ultimate college prank? Or, has Judge Roberts used the secret handshake of the Originalist Society?

Or, do the papers withheld from the Senate Committee contain the flaming manifesto of a man destined to push, shove, pull or drag our nation back, back, back to the fantasized days when real men (and women) succeeded without any government help, the environment cleaned itself, no woman ever had an unwanted pregnancy, the stock market regulated itself, nobody noticed the color of anyone’s skin and hunters could use bazookas to bring down elephants or squirrels (if they wanted to).

While I doubt that the Judge Roberts I witnessed on my TV would have been so intemperate that he would have left such a paper trail – even in his home safe written in code – it is troubling to suspect that he has revealed a lot more to somebody than he has to the Senate Committee. Did he and President Bush simply wink at each other? Or, was this a Putin (heart-reading) moment?
