Possible Salmonella contamination is forcing a recall of popular Malt-O-Meal breakfast cereal. The cereal recall involves the puffed rice varieties made by Malt-O-Meal.
The cereals include unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat cereals, which have been distributed under the Malt-O-Meal brand name as well as other private brand names including Hannaford, Shaw’s, Acme, America’s Choice, Food Club, Giant, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.
The products were shipped nationwide with “Best if used by” dates between April 8, 2008, and March 18, 2009.
Salmonella poisoning can cause illness that includes vomitting, diarrhea, and fever. No injuries have been reported from eating or handling the cereal. If you purchased the recalled cereal you may return it to the store you purchased it from for a full refund. If you are ill from eating the cereal you should contact your doctor or local health department immediately. You can also contact the company for more information at 1-877-665-9331.
