BP officials will drop a 100 ton containment dome over a mile-deep gusher from a sunken oil well that has been spewing 210,000 gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico in order to stem the tide of oil. BP officials concede this procedure has never been attempted in such deep waters. The oil spill has already reached land in Louisiana. BP remains cautious about the success of the procedure. "We don’t know for sure" whether the equipment will work, said BP spokesman Bill Salvin. "What we do know is that we have done extensive engineering and modeling and we believe this gives us the best chance to contain the oil, and that’s very important to us."
