If you were fortunate enough to make it to an Emergency Room soon after a heart attack or a stroke you would hope the best medical care would be provided immediately. TPA (tissue plasminogen activator) is often the most appropriate care, but it must be given within three hours for a stroke and twelve hours for a heart attack. I thank Jeremy Thurman of Napoli Bern, LLP, New York City Personal Injury Firm, for his reminder about the truly amazing benefits of TPA. Unfortunately, I can say that the ER’s of Tampa Bay hospitals do not always recognize the need for TPA. Therefore, the window of opportunity is missed at times.

One major aspect of emergency management and treatment of heart attacks and ischemic strokes that the general public is unaware of, is a drug called TPA (tissue plasminogen activator). TPA will accelerate clot breakdown and help reestablish blood flow to an ischemic area. For this to be beneficial, TPA needs to be administered within the first three hours after the stroke. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), if TPA is given within the first 3 hours of a stroke, it may reduce permanent disability. If given within 12 hours of the onset of a heart attack, the person has a better chance for survival and recovery.
