A company that was touting a supplement as a way to lower cholesterol has recalled the product after the FDA stepped in. Sunburst Organics is recalling Cholestrix because it contains lovastatin. The recalled supplement contains red yeast rice with lovastatin and that can damage kidneys and muscles.

The FDA informed Sunburst Organics that because Cholestrix made a cholesterol-fighting claim, it could not be marketed as a supplement that does not go through an agency approval process.

Because lovastatin had already been approved by the FDA as a drug, it cannot be marketed as a supplement, the agency told Sunburst Biorganics.

The products have been removed from the company’s store and website. The company issued a statement claiming they didn’t realize it was technically a drug product.
