It was announced last week that 1.2 Million doses of the HIB vaccine were recalled. The recalled vaccine was manufactured in a Pennsylvania plant that was found to be contaminated. The CDC is concerned of a vaccine shortage and urged doctors to delay the third and final booster shot in the series. The vaccine is given to infants to help prevent pneumonia and meningitis.
Normally, the government recommends children get the three-shot vaccine at age 2 months, 4 months and then a booster at 12-15 months. But doctors should defer giving that last booster for the time being, said officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
It may be some time before the plant is able to start making the vaccine again. Merck is saying that the recalled vaccine poses no health risk to the children that may have received it.
