Judge Ito (Yes, From O.J.'s Trial) Revisited

Comments Off

Monday will be the 10th anniversary of the not guilty verdict in the O.J. Simpson double murder trial. The trial lasted just under 10 months. However, the jury returned the verdict after only three hours of deliberation.

That was the lead sentence last October of a CBS News article recalling some of the circumstances of the trial and the verdict. O.J. pops up in the news just enough these days to remind me about his trial.

My most recurrent memory of the televised “Trial of the Century” is that Judge Ito totally lost control of the courtroom and the attorneys. For whatever reason he abdicated his responsibility to our system of justice and permitted seemingly endless and pointlessly minute testimony and arguments. If even 1% of the trials in America proceeded in the O.J. Simpson mode we would have to shut down courthouses.
