Gentlemen, Check Your Batteries

Comments Off

Ross Ipsa Loquitur posts on the subject of the self-immolating Sony-built batteries.

It is just a matter of time before one of these batteries ignites in a particularly bad place and time. It could happen in Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo or Tampa, Florida, just as easily as in New York City or Chicago. And, a battery could combust during the night just as easily as during the day.

The situation with self-immolating Sony-built batteries has actually gotten worse. More major laptop manufacturers including Lenovo (Thinkpads) have put out alerts about the Sony batteries. At this point, whatever brand laptop you might have, whether Apple, Dell, Toshiba, etc. could have a Sony battery. Check your vendor’s website for any notices of recall. Lenovo’s site has a downloadable tool that can ID the type of battery you have to see if it is subject to a recall. My Thinkpad T43p in spite of being listed as a model under suspicion tested out with a “safe” battery model. The real question is, how could Sony have screwed up so badly? This is costing affected companies a bloody fortune. ZDNet has a good article on the subject. EVERY laptop user needs to pay attention to this issue – the alternative is to unpleasant to consider (especially if it happens at 35,000 feet in an oxygen-rich environment).
